We have been identifying "Snapper Words" while we read. Snapper words are vocabulary terms that we are unfamiliar with, but will probably encounter repeatedly during our studies and as we read literature. We have focused on 4 different strategies to help us build meaning as we encounter them.
1. Scan our Schema - use what we already know to help us figure out the meaning of the word.
2. Context Clues - we read on or reread to pick up clues from the text that will help us.
3. Word parts - we use affixes and base words to determine meaning
4. Resources - Ask someone, use electronic resources, or dictionary.
Snapper words are then recorded in our Literacy binder for future use.
This blog site is used by my 5/6 grade literacy students. We integrate our literacy with our social studies learning so connections to our writings are connected to this site also. We use this blog to communicate our literacy and social studies experiences. It is our hope that it will be an interactive blog with relevant comments peer to peer and also family members, other educators, and/or interested people. Our blog will continue to change with our learning.
