Reading Fluently

We have been practicing reading with fluency.  Fluency includes paying attention to our expression, our phrasing, and the punctuation.  These three components are broken down like this:

Expression: This refers to how we show emotion.
We typically show this by changing our volume and the tone of our voice.
Expression reflects meaning of the text or indicates that a character is speaking.

Phrasing: This refers to how we group words into meaningful chunks making it easier to comprehend what we read.

Punctuation: This refers to the way we use punctuation cues - pausing at commas, changing our tone for questions, using an excited voice for exclamation marks, etc.

Fluency is an important part of understanding what we read.  Comprehension can be more challenging if we cannot read with fluency.

We have listened to several selections to identify how they have been read differently from each other.  Serious texts are read more slowly possibly with more pauses for effect.  Humorous pieces are sometimes read at a faster rate and in excited tones.  We have also practiced our fluency with short pieces of text including poems.
